Finding HIPs at UGA
At UGA, courses representing the four initial High-Impact Practices can be found in
several ways. For instance, First-Year Odyssey seminars are listed by semester of
availability on the First-Year Odyssey website. Service-learning, undergraduate research, and writing-intensive courses carry a particular suffix in UGA’s CAPA system. Additionally, the Office of Curriculum Systems has added “attributes”
for these courses using tags provided by the University System of Georgia.
To see what courses have been approved with these suffixes, click here.
To find which courses identified as high-impact practices are offered in a given semester,

Course Listings
More HIPs courses have been approved than are offered in a given semester. Here are a few more resources for finding other relevant courses.
- • The Writing Intensive Program maintains a listing, updated each spring, of writing-intensive courses offered during the upcoming academic year.
- • For undergraduate research, most prefixes have a university-wide progressive course sequence designated with
numbers 4960R, 4970R and 4980R (for research courses), and 4990R (the capstone of
the sequence, a research thesis). Currently approved courses can be found by searching for these course numbers using
the particular departmental prefix in CAPA’s browse menu.
- • First-Year Odyssey seminars currently available can be found online, by searching keywords, titles, instructors, or college/department.
- • Courses that have been approved with the S suffix or with the W suffix can be found by clicking on the appropriate box in the advanced search in UGA’s course bulletin website.
